Salzburg's Baroque cathedral, the Salzburger Dom, was built during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), which started as a struggle between Catholics and Protestants across the Holy Roman Empire. Salzburg itself managed to stay out of the war. The magnificent dome was damaged by a bomb during World War II. Restoration work was completed in 1959.
